Weed beds have been moved so that swims 20-30 and 35-40 should have Norfolk Reed when it grows in the spring. A whole new look and about time.

MERSTONE FISHERIES THE PROJECT

Merstone Fisheries became a project in 1992 when we purchased an eleven and a half acre field and submitted plans for development.

A great deal of effort and hard work followed but the rewards are available for all to see.

We now have on this site, three lakes with a total area of approaching six acres of water, the depth approx. 2 metres &  varies 1 metre depending on the season.

Our Merstone Fisheries are located by driving through Merstone from Newport turning left into BURY LANE then right into EAST LANE towards Budbridge Manor. ¾ of a mile down the lane we are situated on the left.

The site is a members and permit holders only fishery, strictly no fishing before first buying permit or joining the Association, the details are on our main page.

The first lake to be constructed was KINGFISHER LAKE on the left hand side of the site.  This lake has been designed as a match lake with 40 pegged swims. There is approximately 2½ acres of water, with an island in the middle. It 25 metres from any bank and varies in depth from 1½ to 2½ metres.   We regularly hold club matches here and invite mainland clubs on a return basis to participate several times a year.

Fish species:

Carp, common & mirror to 22lb. Bream to 10 lb. Tench to 6 lb. Perch to 3 lb. Roach, Crucian Carp and Rudd to 2 lb.

Heron Lake

This Lake followed shortly afterwards; it is also dug out to 2½ acres of water with two islands down the middle. Conservation and biodiversity are very high on our list of priorities and it is planned that this lake will be kept for the use of pleasure anglers( NOW!!! JUNE 2005 Members ONLY) There are a limited number of fixed swims to allow the lake to develop naturally. The water depth varies from 1 to nearly 3 metres in the early part of the year.  If you are the type of angler that seeks peace and tranquillity whilst contemplating (can I teach my worm to swim) this lake is for you. This lake has also been offered to the R.S.P.C.A as a release area for recuperating wildfowl etc. NO adverse comments from anglers to date.

Fish species: Carp Common/Mirror 25lb. Bream 14lb and Tench to 9 lb. Roach, Perch, Rudd to 2 lb.

Minnow Lake

When Heron Lake was completed funds were rapidly diminishing and we were struggling to attempt a third lake when we applied, in Sept 1996 and were awarded, on the recommendations of the  Lottery Panel to the Sports Council (who are now called SPORT ENGLAND) a grant for £7,210. This grant allowed us to clear the site, dig a lake approximately 1 acre and 2-½ metres deep.

HOWEVER, it still fell short of our overall plans for our last lake on this site. Enter the Environment Agency in November 1998, if we could come up with an estimated project and firm proposals and get it completed within three months we would receive financial assistance from them.  We succeeded; consequently this enabled us to complete our project to a very high standard with all the extras we had planned right down to the last stone. This included three specific parking bays to allow anglers to fish from their cars, we had disabled anglers in mind.  A 2 metre tarmac path from the parking bays was laid down one side. On the other two sides we have laid chipped bark.  We also improved the main car park and landscaped the area, fitting a safety rail around the whole lake as an extra feature. We have a planned commitment to use this lake for introducing junior anglers to the finer points of piscatorial pursuits. It is our aim to encourage all types of disabled persons to the sport of angling and to provide facilities accordingly, but we need support from them.

Do not hesitate to let us know of your requirements, give us a chance to succeed with our aspirations.
